Summer Camp 2020

The Scouting Must Go On!

July 27 - August 2

Scouts Persevere.

Despite many curveballs and road blocks, Troop 131 is pleased to announce the program for this year's summer camp. The Scouting must go on…..

Monday - Thursday: All camp activities will be held at Birchwold Farm. Most days will run 9:30 to 6:30.

Friday - Sunday: We will be camping at Camp Squanto in Plymouth, MA.

Scouts will work throughout the week to take their skills to the next level. Each Scout will be assigned to a group based on their rank, age, and scout skill level.

Here's a preview of what you can expect!

What to bring

Scouts should plan to bring the following items EVERY day. Additional, day-specific items are also listed under each day.

  • A SPARE face mask

  • Hand Sanitizer

  • A FULL water bottle

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • Insect repellent

  • Hat

  • Folding Chair

  • Your Scoutbook

  • Pencil or pen

  • Notebook

  • Pocket Knife

  • A light snack

  • Compass

  • Personal First Aid Kit

  • Rain gear (Watch the forecast!)

  • Boots or sneakers (no open-toed shoes, it will be muddy in some areas!)

MonDAY: The Basics! - 9:30am - 6:30PM

  • We will assemble at Birchwold Farm to focus on several Scout basics including knots, compass and maps, and an orienteering adventure. The real focus will be on learning how to use these skills in the wilderness.

  • We will end the day with a unique cooking challenge.

  • A good portion of the day will be spent "bushwacking" using a map and compass. Convertible hiking pants (with zip off legs) would be preferred clothing for the day. Wearing shorts is fine, but having pant legs that you can attach will help prevent scratches and exposure to poison ivy.

  • More Established and Most Established Scouts may want to consider bringing a pair of leather work gloves. You will be working with natural fiber rope which can give "splinters".

TUESDAY: To Diamond Hill and Back! - 9:30am - 6:30PM

  • Building on Monday’s skills, we will hike all the way from Birchwold Farm to the top of Diamond Hill in Cumberland RI. Yes, it's possible!

  • Most Established Scouts may want to consider bringing a pair of leather work gloves. You will be working with natural fiber rope which can give "splinters".

  • Everyone should bring extra water for this hike. Sturdy footwear, preferably hiking boots, is a must!

  • We may have a special food treat at the end of the hike. Stay tuned!

WEDNESDAY: Requirements Smörgåsbord! - 9:30am - 6:30PM

  • Today will be a true smörgåsbord, meaning, we'll be doing a little bit of everything. First aid requirements, nature requirements, water (on land) requirements, merit badge requirements, etc.

  • Newer Scouts and Most Established Scouts may want to consider bringing a pair of leather work gloves. You will be working with natural fiber rope which can give "splinters".

  • We'll cap the day off with a patrol cookout!

THURSDAY: Taking it to the next level! - 9:30am - 6:30PM

  • Newer Scouts will learn camping basics, including knife and fire safety. They will also work to earn a merit badge.

  • More Established Scouts will learn about wilderness survival, advanced camping skills, and build a basic pioneering tool.

    1. Scouts should bring flint and steel and/or a magnifying glass if they have it.

    2. Scouts may want to consider bringing a pair of leather work gloves. You will be working with natural fiber rope which can give "splinters".

  • The Most Established Scouts will focus on Pioneering! You'll reinforce your current lashing techniques and then build something cool!

FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY: Taking the show on the Road!

  • We will explore the camp, have fun, and keep safe.

  • This will be a great time for participating in Scoutmaster Conferences, finishing up one of those partial merit badges, and just hanging out 6 feet away from friends.

  • Scouts should plan to arrive AT CAMP SQUANTO at 6:00PM on Friday

  • Scouts should expect to be picked up at 10:00AM AT CAMP SQUANTO on Sunday morning.

Throughout the week you will have the opportunity to complete tons of rank requirements, including many cooking requirements. You will earn a merit badge. Above all, you'll have a great time!!!
